Nero Installation Problem “your system has not been modified’

This issue could be caused by a compatibility problem between Nero and the Windows service “Automatic Updates”. Enable this service when installing Nero 8.
Please follow the steps below:
Click “Start” in the Windows start menu.
Click the “Run” command.
The window “Run” will open.
Enter “services.msc” in the “Open” text field and click the “OK” button.
The “Services” window will open.
Doubleclick the “Automatic Updates” entry.
The “Automatic Updates Properties” window will open.
In the drop down menu under “Startup Type” select the option “Manual”.
Confirm this change with “Apply” and “OK”.
Start the installation of Nero 8 again.



I tried just about everything I could think of to fix the repeated reboot problem. This is what finally did the trick:

1 Click Start
2. click Run.
3. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
4. Locate and click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager

5. Locate and delete any PendingFileRenameOperations values in the key.
6. Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the deletion.
7. Quit Registry Editor.

Increase Internet Speed in Windows XP

Microsoft reserve 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes
(suspect for updates and interrogating your machine etc..)

Here's how to get it back:

Click Start-->Run-->type "gpedit.msc" without the ""

This opens the group policy editor. Then go to:

Local Computer Policy-->Computer Configuration-->Administrative Templates-->Network-->QOS Packet Scheduler-->Limit Reservable Bandwidth

Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab :

"By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default."

So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.
Works on XP Pro and 2000

At the RUN prompt type regedit !!!

In the Registry Editor expand HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT -> .DAT !!!

There right click on .DAT and create a NEW KEY !!!

Name it as "ShellEx" !!!

Now right click on "ShellEx" and create a NEW KEY !!!

Next expand .MPG and copy the KEY value under ShellEx !!!

Paste it for the key (under ShellEx) just created for .DAT !!!

Again move to .MPG !!!

Click on the value under ShellEx !!!

There in the right pane double click on the DEFAULT under Name !!!

Copy the value next to VALUE DATA and paste for the .DAT one !!!

Close the Registery Editor !!!


Now you can see the thumbnails of .DAT files as well !!!

How to Print a Folder (Directory) Listing The following instructions explain how to print a folder listing directly to your printer or to copy the listing to a text file that you can open (and format) in a text editor or word processor before printing. Printing a List of Files Directly to Your Printer Exit to a command prompt by clicking Start on the Taskbar and choosing Programs, then Command Prompt. To print a list of files in a folder on your computer's hard disk, type the following command at the prompt (e.g., C:\>), replacing c:\folderpath with the full path to the folder you want to print (e.g., c:\MyFiles). (See also NOTE, below.) dir c:\folderpath > prn: Tap the ENTER key. Most likely the list won't print until you initiate a form feed on your printer. On an HP laser printer, press the On Line button and then the Form Feed button. When the list has finished printing, press the On Line button again. When finished printing your folder list(s), at the command prompt type Exit and tap the face=Arial,Helvetica>ENTER key to return to Windows NT/95. Copying a Folder List to a File Before Printing Exit to a command prompt by clicking Start on the Taskbar and choosing Programs, then Command Prompt.  To copy a list of files in a folder on your computer's hard disk and place the resulting file in the root directory on your C drive, type the following command at the prompt (e.g., C:\>), replacing c:\folderpath with the full path to the folder you want to print (e.g., c:\MyFiles). (See also WARNING and NOTES, below).  dir c:\folderpath > c:\folderlist.txt    Tap the ENTER key.  When finished copying your folder list(s), at the command prompt type Exit and tap the face=Arial,Helvetica>ENTER key to return to Windows NT/95.  Open, edit/format, and print as follows:  You can open a file containing a folder list in the text editor Notepad by simply opening (double-clicking) My Computer and double-clicking the name of the text file you want to open (e.g., folderlist.txt). Edit and print as desired.  If you want to edit or format a folder listing in ways that aren't possible in a simple text editor, you can open the file in your word processor. Be sure to choose a "text" file type (Text Files in Word 97) and to "look in" the correct folder [such as (C:)]. Edit, format, and print as desired.

 


 

Password Expire Problem in Windows XP

This is normal in XP. It's good practice to change your user name frequently. It lowers your risk of security breeches. If you are using a computer a work, you should change your passwords. If you are a home user, it's not so important to change your password.
If you want to keep your password, you can turn off XP's password changing requirements. Here's how:
1. Open your Users control panel.
2. Find the profile you want to modify and open it.
3. Check the box that says "Password never expires."

System Tray icons

• Windows XP now hides items that used to appear in your System Tray.
• To make those items appear:
• Right click on the Taskbar and select Properties.
• Click on the Taskbar tab.
• Look for the option to hide inactive icons and deactivate it.
• Click on Customize for more options.

Add favorites to Start Menu

• Right-click on the Taskbar and select Properties.
• Click on the Start menu tab.
• Select Customized Start menu.
• Click on the Advanced tab.
• In the Start Menu Items windows, look for the option that allows you to show Favorites in your Start menu.

DOWNLOAD UP TO 10 FILES AT A TIME USING IE

1. Hit the Start button, Run. Type in:
regedit
And hit Enter (easy so far, huh?).
2. Now, navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Microsoft>Windows>CurrentVersion>Internet Settings
3. Now, you'll need to right-click on a blank area in the right-hand pane and select New (only option), then DWORD value.
When you do, you'll see a new key that needs a name.
You'll want to name that key:
MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server
Probably best just to copy and paste that line :-)
Now, double-click the key and put this in for the value:
0000000a
4. OK, almost there. You need one more DWORD value. Once again, Right-click inside of the right-hand pane and select New, DWORD value. Name this one:
MaxConnectionsPerServer
Again, copy and pasting the above would probably be best.
Double-click that new key and give it this value:
0000000a
Your two new values should look like this (note that the 0x and (10) are added by windows - don't add them to the values I just gave you):
5. Exit out of the registry editor and restart your computer. You should now be able to DOWNLOAD UP TO 10 FILES AT A TIME USING IE. That's like 5X the fun you were having before!

Disable Autorun on your PC.

1. Start Notepad [Start Menu-All Programs-Accessories-Notepad] or right-click any empty space in your desktop then select New-Text Document

2. Copy the following text. (note: Everything in between the square brackets should be in one line)

3. Save the file with a name (anything) like DisableAutoRun.reg (The extension .reg is the important part)

4. Double Click your newly created registry file. Choose yes or continue to the warning that will appear.
